Charles F. Rood

Charles Frederick Rood, 87, of Viroqua, WI, passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 26, 2021, while holding the hands of his beloved wife of 67 years, Loretta, and surrounded by his family. 

Charles was born on September 4, 1933, to Elwin and Marjorie (Rumsey) Rood.  Charles lived his entire life in the Springville area and passed away in the same home he was born in.  He married Loretta Mae Tollackson on February 12, 1955.  In 1966, Charles and Loretta built the family’s home on their 178 acres of land, ½ mile North of Springville.  It was here he raised Angus beef cattle and brood sows, while working as a welder at Trane Company in La Crosse.  He had only intended to work outside of farming until the homestead was paid off…thirty-one years later, he retired from Trane Company. 

Charles enjoyed hunting, fishing in Canada with family and friends, and taking his family on various camping trips across the country.  Raising tobacco was a family effort for many years and helped to fund these memorable events.  During his retirement, he enjoyed woodworking, carving, furniture building, and creating miniature wooden figurines in his woodworking shop.  He loved to watch and feed the many songbirds that gathered in the front yard.  Trips to the park with his dog Abi were one of his daily joys, as well as morning card games of Cribbage and Skip-bo with his wife.  Charles was known for his generosity and mild temperament, quick wit, and humor creating fun banter among those who knew him well.  Charles will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; children: Brian (Denise) Rood, Scott (Cathy) Rood, Todd Rood, and Rhonda (Terry Trueblood) Rood; grandchildren:  Matthew, Joshua, Chelsea, Gwen, Charlie, Dustin, Austin, Griffin, and Tessa; nine great-grandchildren; brother Dale Rood; sister-in-law Victoria Yttri; brothers-in-law:  Alan, Richard, and Robert Tollackson; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one grandson, Eric Rood. 

A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 2nd, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church.  A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2021, from 5p.m-7p.m. at the church.  Burial will take place in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery.
