Dana Hoff Obituary

Dana Lou Hoff was born on October 18,1936 at the Carr family farm, rural Viroqua, to H.P. and Ruth Ernest Carr. She is survived by a son Duane Dean of Viroqua, a daughter Deeann, a son-in-law David Morgan and a granddaughter Milana of Charlotte, N.C.

Dana was baptized and confirmed in the Viroqua Lutheran Church. She graduted from Viroqua High School in 1954 and started as a bookkeeper for Swangstu Bros. Implement and later at Swangstu and Solverson, both in Viroqua.

On September 3, 1955, Dana was united in marriage to Duane Hoff. They lived their entire married life in the Viroqua area. Their union was blessed with two children, Duane Dean and Deeann Jill.

Dana was partner and bookkeeper for Duane’s Mobil service station and bulk plant businesses. She also worked for 20 years for Evenstad Tax Service and later for A-1 Tax Service of Westby and Viroqua Accounting and Tax Service.

In 1961, son Dean was born and three years later, daughter Deeann came along. In 1970, Duane, Dana, Dean and Deeann assisted in the building their A-frame house south of Viroqua, where Duane and Dana lived for over 45 years. They sold the A-frame in 2016 and moved to Dana’s ancestral farm, which they purchased after the death of her family. The Carr Farm has been in Dana’s family since 1880.

She was a wonderful wife and mother, talented baker and dedicated member of the community. Dana served many years on committees and was involved and was a member of: Viroqua Lionettes, American Legion Auxillary, Mary-Miriam Circle, the Parade Committee, was active in plans for Fourth of July Fireworks, supported the Viroqua Museum, was instrumental in restoring Viroqua’s Temple Theater and was a long-time member of Good Shephard Lutheran Church.

For many summers, Dana and her family spent Sundays enjoying the beach and waterskiing on the Mississippi. She and Duane enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. including a six-week, 10,000-mile driving trip to Alaska, a riverboat cruise down the Mississippi and many memorable family vacations. They toured Europe extensively and visited Dana’s family in Denmark and Duane’s family in Norway.

Dana is survived by her son, Duane Dean of Viroqua, daughter, Deeann (David Morgan) and one granddaughter, Milana Morgan of Charlotte, North Carolina, nephews Dane (Terri) Kanable and Kent of Viola, Tammy (Rick) Simonson of
Somerset, WI and Kristi (Randy) Mikkelson of Genoa, as well as cousins and friends.

Dana is preceded in death by her parents, Hurley and Ruth, husband Duane in 2022, brother, Donald J. Nelson in 1994, sister Marilyn Kanable in 2007, brother and sister-in-law Clarence and Bonita Jerman and brothers-in-law Duane Kanable and Darrel Hoff.

Funeral services will be held at Good Shephard Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 20, 2024.  A visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.  There will be a private family burial.

One of Dana’s favorite poems:

Nobody Knows It But Me

“There’s a place I travel when I want to roam, and nobody knows it but me.

The roads don’t go there and the signs stay home, and nobody knows it but me.

It’s far, far away and way, way afar, it’s over the moon and the sea

and wherever you’re going, that’s where you are.

And nobody knows it but me.”
