Harry Monroe Obituary

Harry J. Monroe died Thursday, June 27th, 2024, at the age of 80 doing one of the things he loved most in this world – riding his bike.  Harry kept meticulous track of the miles he put on his bike each day, week and year in little notebooks.  The amount of miles were staggering to his friends and family.  Last year Harry was in a serious bike vs. deer accident – and against all odds he not only recovered, but got back on his bike and kept on pedaling.  He was unstoppable that way, and in so many other ways.

Harry loved and was devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife Barb, who he shared nearly 57 wonderful years of marriage with.  They loved to spend “regular days” on the farm together and take wonderful adventures traveling to far off places. Together they have three children:  Barry (Debra) Monroe, Jeremy (Ingrid) Youngblood, and Liz (Jim) VanHeuklon. Harry was so proud of all of them, and loved to tell stories of all of their accomplishments, and tales of what they were doing in their lives.  He is also survived by many adoring grandchildren, who will forever miss their Papa: Nathan, Maggie, Gabby, Faith, Lars, Violet and Velma.

Harry and Barb moved to Dell 25 years ago, and thus began some of the best years of their lives. Harry is a farmer to the core, and he adored his farm. He grew a ridiculous number of vegetables and shared them with anyone who would take them. The words “I have a couple tomatoes for you”  would strike fear in his daughter’s heart, knowing that meant at least 2-3 bushels were coming her way soon.  Harry was generous and kind, and he taught all of his children and grandchildren to follow in his footsteps.  He will be dearly missed.

Harry’s family will be having a private celebration of his life at his farm. As Harry prioritized being friendly and gracious to all he met, the family asks you to do the same – the next time you see someone who could use a hand, lend it to them in Harry’s honor.  It would mean so much to him.
