James Joseph Obituary

James ‘Jim’ Royal Joseph, 84, of Viola, WI; passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026, surrounded by friends and family, while at Emplify Health (Gundersen) in La Crosse, Wisconsin.

Born on July 2, 1941 and raised in the Viola and West Lima area. James lived a life of faith, family, hard work, and service to his community. He graduated from West Lima High School, Class of 1959, where he developed a lifelong love of sports—especially baseball. He pitched for the Cottage Grove men’s baseball team, refereed basketball games in Madison, and continued his involvement in athletics by umpiring local softball leagues into his late 40s.

At age 23, James married (Carolyn Pasch), and eventually became the proud father to seven children. He raised his family in the Hillsboro area, where he farmed for many years. James returned to school in his 40s, graduating from Western Wisconsin Technical College in tool and die making. He completed his working career after 16 years with Dumore Corporation in Mauston, WI.

A devoted man of faith, James served as a Deacon at Hillsboro First Congregational Church and was an active member of the Lions Club in Hillsboro for several years. His commitment to both church and community reflected his steady character and generous spirit. Outside of work, service and sports, James loved watching old western shows and found joy in fishing and later discovered a talent for carving wood figurines, a hobby that showcased his patience and craftsmanship.

For the past 14 years, James shared a happy marriage with Sandy Joseph (Dank). James deeply cherished her companionship and affection, and enjoyed the company of her children and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Dale and Arlene Adelphia Joseph; his son, Jason Joseph; and his grandsons, Keatan Lund-Joseph and Simon Joseph.

James is survived by his wife Sandy, his children: Angela Joseph (Timothy Borchert) of Christiana, TN; John Joseph (Dolly) of Portales, NM; Ginger Joseph of Necedah, WI; Matthew Joseph (Adriane) of Oakdale, WI; Mark Joseph (Amber) of Viroqua, WI; and Luke Joseph (Mary) of Hancock, WI, along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, his six siblings (Nancy, Jerry, Mike, Jane, Betsy, Tim) and extended family members.

James will be remembered for his devotion to family, faithful service, strong work ethic, and the gentle and quiet strength with which he lived his life.
