Larry C. Hooverson

Larry C. Hooverson, age 76, of Westby, passed away unexpectantly on Monday, May 31, 2021. Larry was born October 25, 1944 at Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua, WI to Clarence and Alverda (Struxness) Hooverson. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church in Viroqua, WI and graduated from Viroqua High School in 1962. He married Sonja Gilbertson on January 29, 1966 and became a member of Westby Coon Prairie Church. Larry was a member of the National Guards and the Coon Valley American Legion. He was employed by the Vernon County Highway Department for 35 years until his retirement in 2000.

Larry was an avid hunter and fisherman. He especially enjoyed sharing his love of hunting with his two sons and grandchildren. The family was all very excited when his buck, “Albert,” made it into the Boone and Crockett record club. Larry loved the many pets he had over the years dearly. He was especially fond of Kali, his Capuchin monkey, who loved playing with his beard and going on nightly UTV rides with him and Sonja. Larry loved spending time with his family, playing cards, watching Gunsmoke, searching eBay and YouTube, and tinkering with his vehicles. Above all else, Larry loved his family. He spent 55 years happily married to his beloved wife Sonja, and he was so very proud of his children and grandchildren.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sonja; his son, Brent (Peggy) of rural Ettrick and their children Robin (Mike) Flanagan of Onalaska, and Cody of Hokah Minnesota; his son Randy (Val) of Westby and their children Ryan and Kaitlyn of La Crosse; and his daughter Lynn (Bruce) Peterson of Chaseburg and their children Paige (James) of Brooklyn Park, MN, Mandy of La Crosse, Cassie of Grafton, WI, Cole of La Crosse; his two sisters, Sandy Dahl and Gloria Olson; many nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Alverda (Struxness) Hooverson; his brothers-in-law Larry Dahl and Ivan Olson; his niece Lori Vielma; nephew Jeff Olson.

A service is being held on Saturday, June 5th at the Coon Prairie Country Church in Westby at 11:00 am with Pastor Meg Hoversten officiating.  Friends may call from 10:00am until time of the service.  Military Rites will be provided by the Coon Valley American Legion Post #116 and the Army Honor Guard.
