Michael Dishnow Obituary

Michael Alvern Dishnow, 81, of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on October 23, 2025.

Michael grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where he developed an early love for the outdoors. Whether he was quietly reading a good book or spending long days fishing and hunting, he found peace and purpose in the simple beauty of nature. Those early years shaped the calm strength, patience, and curiosity that defined his life.

After a short time in college, Michael answered a higher calling and joined the United States Marine Corps. He served honorably in Vietnam and Southeast Asia. His service reflected his deep sense of duty and courage which guided him throughout his life. When his military chapter ended, Michael returned to his passion for learning and earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education and school counseling. His career in education took him from the wide landscapes of Alaska to the rolling hills of Wisconsin. He dedicated himself to helping students find confidence, direction, and hope. His gentle wisdom left a lasting impression on every student and colleague who had the privilege of knowing him.

Even after retiring a second time, Michael continued to teach. For more than a decade, he volunteered to teach English to students from Taiwan and formed friendships that crossed oceans. He traveled to Taiwan each year until the COVID-19 pandemic and welcomed many visitors from abroad into his home, sharing stories, laughter, and his love of learning.

Michael is survived by his loving wife, Diane Dishnow; his daughter Kelly and Greg Karczmar and their children Alexa and Alyna; his daughter Rebecca and Craig Martin and their children Sean and Chad; his daughter Mary and Mitch Bradner and their children Michael, Kegan, and McKinley; and his son Marcus and Calli McGirr and their children Oakley and Ozren. He is also survived by his sister Kathy and Ken Niemi and their children Mandy and Rob Christoff and their children Addison and Brendan, and Kellan and Holly Niemi and their child Hadley; and his sister Marlen and Morgan Pierce and their children Shannon and Matt Pettit and their child Joey, and Jennifer and James Arnet and their child Colt.

Michael was preceded in death by his parents Vern and Leah Dishnow and his son Michael Dishnow.

Those who knew Michael will remember his quiet humor, his kindness, and his ability to make others feel valued. He approached life with gratitude, humility, and a genuine belief in the goodness of people.

Michael’s family and friends will carry forward the lessons he lived by: to serve others, to keep learning, and to love deeply. He will be missed beyond measure and remembered always with affection and gratitude.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the friends, neighbors, and caregivers who offered love, support, and comfort during Mike’s illness. A special thank-you is given to the hospice team whose compassion and care made such a difference.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, no formal service will be held. In lieu of gifts, Mike asked that donations be made to the North Crawford Rescue Squad, an all-volunteer team that provided tremendous support and care to him and his family. Contributions may be mailed to 300 Manning Ave, Soldiers Grove, WI 54655 or given online at https://gofund.me/0196ca106.
