Rhoda Leann Alexander

March 6, 1959 ~ July 15, 2023 (age 64) 64 Years Old

In Loving Memory of Rhoda

With heavy hearts, we share the news of the peaceful passing of Rhoda Leann Alexander, a remarkable woman who touched the lives of all who knew her. Surrounded by her loved ones in the comfort of her home, she made her transition on Saturday, July 15, 2023. In her serene bedroom, adorned with bright flowers from her beloved garden, the trees could be seen from open windows and the summer breeze carried the soothing scent of essential oils throughout the air.

Born on March 6, 1959 in Janesville, Wisconsin to Mary Ann (Glass) and Gary Lee Alexander. She grew up alongside her sister Deb and brothers Mike and Steve. Rhoda attended Kickapoo School District, where she completed her education and proudly graduated in 1977. These formative years were marked by lifelong friendships with classmates who have recently gathered to reminisce and share yearbook photos, fondly pointing out memorable moments such as the year Rhoda was crowned prom queen and served as student council president. They praised her for her impeccable style, as she created and sewed most of her own clothes.

After high school, Rhoda married and had three children: Ryan, Dana, and Molly, who she lovingly raised surrounded by nature’s beauty on a sunny ridgetop near Coon Valley, Wisconsin. These cherished years were filled with vegetable and flower gardening, firewood and food processing, and raising many different types of animals.  Beyond the homestead, Rhoda was a pillar of support for her children, celebrating milestones and attending countless band, choir, 4-H, and sporting events.

Rhoda devoted her career to supporting women in the Labor & Delivery unit at Gundersen Health System, where she found immense pride in her work. Throughout the years, she had the privilege of touching the lives of countless families, forming deep and lasting connections not only with the individuals she served but also with her colleagues who became like family to her.

Rhoda possessed a well of energy, which she poured into her myriad hobbies. Her talents and passions included soap making, sewing, embroidery, knitting and crocheting, food preservation, beekeeping, wine making, baking, cooking, and transforming her home into a haven of beauty. With a generous spirit, she lovingly shared her creations with those around her, leaving behind enduring tokens of love that will forever serve as cherished reminders of her remarkable presence in our lives.

In June of 2011, Rhoda married Kelly, the love of her life.  In her own words,

"My wonderful husband, Kelly, has been my best friend, my greatest advocate and my hero through all of it. He has tried to make all of my wishes come true, including travel, often to epic music venues in the greatest places that the U.S. has to offer. He is truly the best husband I could have ever imagined."

For 12 blissful years, the couple reveled in the joys of marriage at their picturesque home in De Soto. Together, they crafted a haven of tranquility, nestled amidst acres of serene woods with a gentle brook meandering through the property. Countless evenings have been spent with their children and grandchildren gathered around bonfires, having sleep-overs in the cabin, savoring meals cooked over open flames, playing in the creek, and enjoying the bountiful harvest of homegrown and wild foraged foods.

Rhoda was preceded in death by her infant brother and her father, Gary Alexander. She will be forever in the hearts of her mother Mary Ann (Glass) Alexander, her husband Kelly Alexander, her children, Ryan Sternke, Dana (Curtis) Ryals, and Molly Sternke (Benjamin Bain), her step-children Holly (Adam) Hansen and Ryan (Jessie) Alexander, her grandchildren, Lewis & Emerson, Kane & Grace, Christian & Carter, her sister Debra Alexander (Michael Mulvaney) her two brothers, Michael (Angie) Alexander and Steven (Thereasa) Alexander as well as many other family members and friends.

As we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the extraordinary life she lived and the profound impact she made. Please join us for a Celebration of Life gathering at the Retreat Sportsman’s Club on Sunday, July 23rd, from 1 to 4 pm. This informal gathering is an opportunity to honor Rhoda's vibrant spirit, so we encourage everyone to dress in bright colors and/or floral patterns. We invite those who feel moved to share a personal story about Rhoda as we come together to remember and honor this extraordinary woman and the impact she made on our lives. Let us find solace in each other's company and draw strength from the memories we shared with her.

As we endeavor to uphold and continue Rhoda’s legacy of making a positive impact on the lives of others and the natural world, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Friends of Vernon County Parks and Forests in memory of Rhoda.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the entire care team at the Gundersen Cancer Center for their comprehensive and compassionate guidance throughout Rhoda's journey. Their unwavering support made a profound difference during this challenging time. Additionally, the hospice team played a crucial role assisting the family in providing excellent care, and allowing Rhoda to spend her final weeks in the comfort of her own home. A special thank you goes out to Dr. Harmon, Dr. Benden, nurse Jason Mowry, and Chaplain Lisa, whose dedication addressed the needs of Rhoda’s mind, body, and spirit. We hold deep respect for their exceptional care and commitment.

Rhoda had a lot of great sayings.  In closing, we would like to leave you with one  of our favorites, “Don’t wait for a special day, every day is special”.
