Ruth Lee Obituary

Ruth Priscilla Lee was born Betty Jane on May 22, 1929, in South Dakota.  Ruth was adopted and raised by Pastor Peder and Olava Nordsletten.  On September 24, 1948, Ruth married Charles Lee at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Viroqua. Ruth was beloved mother to six children, Deb, Mark, Brian, Tim, Carrie, and Jay. Ruth passed away peacefully in her sleep February 4th, 2024, at Maplewood Terrace in Viroqua, Wisconsin.

Ruth was loved by all who met her.  She took great interest in the busy lives of her family.  She had a unique ability to make friends who then became devoted friends.  She served as secretary and treasurer at Immanuel Lutheran Church.  Ruth loved to sing and was a member of Sweet Adelines. She enjoyed many years as a sales associate at Viroqua Walmart. Her hobbies included gardening, flower arranging, and maintaining and organizing her many collections.

In 1989, Ruth and Charles began annual trips to Cocoa Beach, Florida, the first being to watch their eldest son, Mark, launch into space. With subsequent shuttle flights, Ruth and Charles became snowbirds.  This started a tradition of winter months in the Florida sun by day and stargazing by night from the beach at a favorite place called The Wakulla.  Ruth and Charles developed many new friendships and Ruth also perfected her skills at shuffleboard.

In February of 2006, Ruth expressed a desire to research her adoption as an infant and to obtain information regarding her biological family. With only a letter Ruth had kept in her possession and help from the internet, son, Brian, was able to reunite Ruth with her birth mother, Minka Disbrow. They met that August and had eight wonderful years fulfilling a relationship. Minka’s granddaughter, Cathy LaGrow, wrote and published The Waiting as the story of the miracle of Ruth and Minka's reunion after 77 years.

Ruth is survived by her husband Charles, their children, Deb (Jim) {Melinda (Eric), Dalton and Claton, Michelle (George), Christopher and Damian, Mitch (Jen), Bennett, Lucas, and Sydney};  Mark (Paula) {Erik (Jenny), Matthew, and Jonathon};  Brian (Teresa) {Annya (Mark), Taylor (Katie), Lucy and Graydon};  Tim (Beth) {Brandon (Lauren) and Jeremy (Kelsey)};  Carrie (David) {Emma (Rob), Edison and Oliver, Hania, and Ian}; and  Jay (Aida) {Parker, Piper, and Emma} along with many nieces and nephews. Very recently, Ruth received with great joy the news of two weddings this summer. The Lee family came together to celebrate the recent holiday with Ruth and Charles and to honor their marriage of 75 years.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents Pastor Peder and Olava Nordsletten, her brothers Orville (Solveig), Pastor Ole (Arlette), and Kenny (Nadeen) Nordsletten, and her birth mother, Minka Disbrow.

The family would like to thank Maplewood Terrace and St. Croix Hospice staff for the wonderful care that Ruth received.
